I spent the day, Thursday, talking to the 3rd year class at The Joe Kubert School in Dover, New Jersey.

There’s a great group of students about to graduate next May. I can only hope that some of what I rambled on about to them made sense and helps out.

I don’t think enough graduates of the school take the time to come back and talk to the students about their experiences and lives after graduating, so it was something I felt was important that I do while in town.

The 3 years I spent at Kubert’s were some of the most formative of my life, so it’s the least I can do to talk up the school in interviews and online. To go back to the school and to talk to the current crop of 3rd year students makes it even better.

Had a great time at KC Fancon today.

Thanks to everyone who came out and said hey or bought stuff. I really appreciate it. One of my better shows this year, and I really appreciate the love a lot of you are showing by coming out to see me and say hey at the local shows.

Got to catch up with quite a few people that I don’t get to see regularly enough, and got to do some fun sketches. I didn’t get pics of them all, but here’s a few:

(Sorry for the shitty cam quality, camera phones have improved greatly in the 2 years since I bought mine. Ah well).

As Dennis Hopeless can attest, I come up with ideas left and right. Most of them are half-formed garbage, but that’s how my brain works. Just come up with shit left and right and see what sticks. Sometimes I get so far into an idea that it actually becomes something, but then peters out due to lack of time/interest/ability. BANDWIDTH is one of those ideas. Basically, it’s “Enemy of the State” but with a dude that can hear radio/bluetooth/etc. signals clearly. I was working on GearHead at the same time, so it never got much farther than these 6 pages. Plus, I suck at doing research, and a concept like this lives and dies on ones ability to convince the audience that you know what you’re talking about, even if you’re full of shit. I just couldn’t pull it off at that time. Maybe some day, who knows. I’ve retooled the concept somewhat since then, so it’s much less of an ‘on-the-run’ dramatic thriller now and more of a ‘fuck-yeah-technology’ action-ey thing. We’ll see. Anyways, enjoy me in 2006.

Unfortunately for my wrists, this many panels on a page is more the norm for this book than not. No complaining though, it’s fun to work on and I love being able to put in all the little moments and shots that I sometimes have to skimp on when doing work for hire.

I’m just stupid for not making the book that I chose to write, draw, ink, color and letter a much simpler effort… Yeesh.

I rarely use conventional/standard comic page grids, but Dennis’ beats for this conversation and the actions going on with the waffles made it a good place to make use of the 9 panel grid.
